Kilmokea Gardens
Kilmokea Gardens opens from Easter to Halloween. We really look forward to welcoming you. So much work is being carried out creating freshly planted beds, new fruit and vegetable beds and Coppicing in the woodland which stimulates vibrantly coloured new stems and dramatic foliage effects. We are open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm.
The gardens are set around a pretty Georgian house overlooking the River Barrow beyond the wall garden with rose gardens, pools and herbaceous planting. The potager designed as a box maize grows fruit and vegetables for the house where cafe guests enjoy home grown pleasures. Spring water cascades in series of waterfalls through the woodland garden where Camellias, Rhododendrons, Azaleas Candelabra Primulas grow happily. The Kilmokea history is depicted on story boards around the gardens where you can watch short videos through QR codes. The history dates from the mythological legend of Cessair, one of the first goddesses of Ireland through to the establishment of the 7th Century Monastic site with the smallest high cross in Ireland, which was taken over by the Vikings and then the Normans.
